Local changemakers are invited to attend an inspiring event to explore ways to change the world for the better by igniting their inner 'spark' of passion and purpose.
Penarth-based Nikki Giant launched the Spark Sessions for Changemakers in 2023 and now hosts the events bi-monthly in Cardiff and online, with the aim of connecting people to their purpose, passion and 'spark' to create social change.
The events are creating a community of inspired thinkers and doers who are ready to put their purpose and passions into action to support people and planet. With inspiring speakers and 'lightning talks' where anyone can take to the floor to share their project or initiative for two minutes, the events aim to provide changemakers with the tools, knowledge and community to find smart solutions to the complex problems we face. Previous attendees have gone on to create social enterprises and charities, start social campaigns and run community projects to help others.
The next event is taking place on Tuesday 4th June at The Bike Lock Café in Cardiff, with a further event scheduled for Thursday 18th July.
Nikki explained that she started the events after feeling isolated after the Covid-19 pandemic. "Having moved back to South Wales in 2021 after living and working in London, I felt as though I'd lost my network and community. As someone who is self-employed and working from home, there was a big gap that an office and colleagues used to fill."
"Added to that, the doom-and-gloom narrative that's pervasive in the media and on social media made me feel hopeless. I wanted to prove that anyone can be a changemaker, and that Wales has plenty of inspiration, motivation and passion to create change that will help the world."
The next event on Tuesday, 4 June will showcase two inspiring local speakers – Simon Philips, originally from Barry in South Wales, and Raman Purewal from Cardiff.
Known as 'The Change Man', Simon Philips will share his story of how a near death experience, and numerous life challenges, led him to create a platform to support changemakers across the world.
Raman will share her experiences growing up in Cardiff and about her work with the youth organisation, One Million Mentors. Raman hopes to inspire attendees to consider making a difference to the life of a young person by becoming a youth mentor, and the impact mentors have on the social and emotional development of youth.
The next event will be held on Tuesday 4th June from 6-9pm at The Bike Lock Cafe in Cardiff, a social enterprise designed to promote active travel.
